HISTORY

Integrated Laboratory Systems, Inc. (ILS) was founded as a research laboratory in 1985 by Dr. Thomas K. Rao. Early success in the federal contracting arena allowed ILS to broaden its capabilities and capacity beyond that of a genetic toxicology laboratory. The first major opportunity occurred in 1988, when ILS was awarded a Quality Assurance contract with the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS). This contract allowed ILS to expand its facilities to accommodate a staff of over 50 including chemists, histologists, toxicologist, and pathologists. This expansion of staff, along with an expansion of the in vivo laboratory, provided the next major growth opportunity, when in 1991, ILS was awarded a research contract with NIEHS for the evaluation of transgenic models. Subsequently, ILS began supporting NIEHS research on molecular oncology. Simultaneously, a series of Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) awards in the 1990s expanded ILS’ toxicology capabilities and broadened ILS’ expertise into ecological and aquatic toxicology. This expertise resulted in ILS’ award of its first EPA Environmental Services Assistance Team contract in 1996. This work has expanded and continues today. Most recently, ILS has moved into the clinical research arena with the award of a major contract studying Anencephaly.

Currently, ILS' research facilities are located in Research Triangle Park, NC; Athens, GA; and Washington, DC. Throughout its history, ILS has demonstrated its ability of provide responsive, scientifically sound research and testing support. ILS’ varied expertise makes it well positioned to provide scientific services in the health and environmental sciences, today and in the years to come.
